Karachi is renowned for the spirit of hospitality embodied by its people. From the politeness of the law enforcement officers to the helpful nature of its citizens, one can sense an aura of warmth in the atmosphere. Dawoodi Bohra community members share this spirit of hospitality. Hundreds of families are graciously hosting fellow community members from different parts of the world, including those whom they will meet for the very first time.

However, for Fatema Juzer Khairullah, a resident of the Haidery locality in Karachi, it is the fourth time over the span of 42 years that she is hosting community members for the ten-day event of Ashara Mubaraka in Muharram.

“Every time I get a chance to host guests, I make sure they feel comfortable and at home.

“I have had 12 to 17 people staying with me each time coming from different places like Africa, Kuwait, India, United States, and Colombo.”

In the face of natural challenges, such as the hot weather and occasional water shortages, she tries her best to mitigate the issues resourcefully.

She also understands that some visitors may have dietary restrictions, so she makes sure to prepare special meals for those who require them.

“My aim is that when they leave my place, they leave with a happy heart,” she said.

Given that her guests come from diverse geographies, she has also experienced the various dispositions that come along with it.

“Each to their own—while guests from the United States are particularly helpful in managing the household tasks, guests from India have been very easygoing and accommodating. Nevertheless, they are all very nice people. ”

Fatema says that despite hosting a family 40 years ago, they still keep in touch.

“Some memories are indelible; they linger on in the heart and bring a smile every time we catch up.”

Fatema’s experience is one in many similar stories across Dawoodi Bohras of Karachi who have opened their homes and formed strong bonds and friendships that span borders, oceans, and decades.
